The Uses of Athletics. Use: They increase physical strength and health. Abuse: In excess, they damage health they may absorb time and attention which should be given to study. The most obvious use of athletics is in connection with physical health. A thletics harden the muscles, expand the lungs, and make the body strong and fit. They may not be necessary for men whose daily work is manual labour but for stud not and people of sedentary occupations, a certain amount of physical exercise is essential and such exercise is best taken in the shape of games and athletic sports. Manly games like hockey and football give a man pluck and courage. Naturally timid boys should play such games, so as to become more manly. Moreover, they teach discipline. No man can be a good athlete who does not control his appetites. He cannot eat and drink the hat he like or sleep as long as he wants, or he will become soft Athletics not only harden his muscles, but strengthen his will power.

The Infuluence of Railways of Indian Social Life. In old days the means of communication in India were very bad. Of course, there were no railways and the roads were few and even they were very unsatis factory. It was the British who introduced, first good metalled roads, and then about the middle of the nineteenth century, railways. Before their time, there fore, there was little travelling for a journey of any length was a tedious difficult and often dangerous business and trade was local and on a very small scale most of the people knew no place but their own village and immediate neighbourhood, and lived and died where they were born. Railways have broken down the isolation of the different parts of India, even the poor have taken to travelling in the trains, and many of them go to quite distant parts. They have discovered that they live in a very large country with many varieties of climate and physical features, and with many different people's and races and nationalities. All this has led to a broadening of the mind and a knowledge of and sympathy with people whom they used to regarded as foreigners. The Influence of Geographical Position and Climate. The influence of climate upon the character of a nation has sometimes been exaggerated, but it is in doubtly of importance. The Importance of Religious. All except those who are opposed to all religion, will agree that every child has a religious eduction, and the that every parent can justly demand that his child shall be taught the doctrines of his particular faith. It seems, therefore, on the face of it, to be natural that religion should have its place among the subject taught in schools. Surely religion is, to say the least of it, as important as history, geography and arithmetic. At school, children should learn not only certain subjects of knowledge, but also right behaviour discipline and good conduct. That is eduction must be not only intellectual, but moral for a good character is more important than even learning. The great preactical object of religion must form the most important part of a moral education. Further where secular education is completely separated from religious education, children grow up in ignorance of their religion and often learn to despise it. A purely secular education has a tendency to undermine religion. At the same time, the giving of religious in school is attended by grave difficulties and drawbacks. Where the people are all of one religion, the matter is simple but where as in India there are many religion in one plac, it becomes very complicated.

The Gramophone Familiarity breeds contempt. The Gramophone is so common now, that we have ceased to winder at it. Yet it is a truly wonderful invention and even now if we possible to catch such a fleeting thing as sound, and record it in such a way that it can be repeated and reproduced at will, so that we can actually hear the very words and the toned of the voice of a man who died, it may be, years ago. The uses of the Gramophone, or talking machine, are many. Its main use is to give pleasure all the pleasure that music can give. It is a great boon to music lovers who have little opportunity fo hearing good music such as those who live in small country places or in foreign lands far from civilization. Such can listen to the voices of the greatest singers and the finest orchestras of the day for the Gramophone is now so perfected that a good machine reproduced the finest shades of tone and expression of human voice and of musical instruments. It has too, its educational uses, especially in teaching music and singing. A singer, by listening to a song sung by some great master, can learn how that song should be sung and he can have the song repeated over and over again, until he has mastered it.

The Game of Cricket ?. Cricket is the great national game of the English. Of all outdoor games, it is the most scientific and requires the most skill. It is played in India also but the expense of its upkeep, and the difficulty in some districts of getting a good ground makes it far les popular in India colleges and schools than football and hockey. Cricket requires a very large ground covered with smooth, level closely cut and well rolled turf. It is played with a hard leather ball bats made of willow wood fitted with cane hard leather ball wickets. There are two wickets placed twenty two yards apart each vo ndistinh of three short posts, called stumps, struck upright in the ground and surmounted by two small wooden pegs called bails. The players consist of batsmen a bowler and fielders. The essence of the game is as follows. The English Language When the Enlish came to India they of coures brought their language with them, and it has been spoken in India, more or less for over a century and a half. At first, of course very few OIndians learnt it butnow it is half. At first, of course, very few indians learnt it but now it is spoken, written and read bylarge numbers and is the medium of instruction in colleges and the upper classes of schools. some object to use of english has become so necessary for educated people but that while we must cultiate out own tongues we must learn it and use it. Ti is not an easy language to learn the spelling and pronunciation being very irregular but its advantages are so great that nations, eash having its own languages. But its advanbtages are so gread that we cannot well doi without it.Indian is a contient of many nations easch having its own languges. But india is on the way to becoming a united nation, and is feeling the need of a common tongue, for one the chief obstacles in the way hoistorical reasons, English promises to be the common language or lingua franca of india at any rate for the educated classes and every one who pretends to eduction will have to know it.

The Different Kinds of Artifical Lights There is no need to dwell on the blessings of artifical light for they are obvious. If we had to depend entirely on the light of the sun, half the work the world does today could be done. The Condition of True Friendship Every one has a number of acquaintances but no one has many friens. For true intimate friendship is not common and there are many people who seem to be incapable of it. For a friendship to be intimate and lasting, both the friends must have some very special qualities. First comes unselfish love which is the very essence of friendship. A man who is engrossed in his own interests ans feelings may no doubt like to have an study his interests. But friendship is a two ship can last long which is all give on one side ans take on the always long which is all give on one side and all take on the other. A selfish person is incapable of true friendship. The love and service must be mutual. Constancy is another important condition of friendship. But some people are constitutionally fickle. They take up an interest with enthusiasm, but theysoon tire of it and feel the attraction of some new object. Such chargeable and uncertain people anyone. Two friends must be loyal to each other and they must know each other so well that there can be no suspicions between them.
