Cricket is the great national game of the English. Of all outdoor games, it is the most scientific and requires the most skill. It is played in India also but the expense of its upkeep, and the difficulty in some districts of getting a good ground makes it far les popular in India colleges and schools than football and hockey.
Cricket requires a very large ground covered with smooth, level closely cut and well rolled turf. It is played with a hard leather ball bats made of willow wood fitted with cane hard leather ball wickets. There are two wickets placed twenty two yards apart each vo ndistinh of three short posts, called stumps, struck upright in the ground and surmounted by two small wooden pegs called bails.
The players consist of batsmen a bowler and fielders. The essence of the game is as follows.
The bowler drivers the ball from one wicket to the batsmen stationed at the batsmen out by striking his wickets with the ball so that the bails are knocked off, can be caught. By one of fielders before it touches the ground.
