एक छोटे से गाँव में एक लड़का था, जिसका नाम अर्जुन था। वह हमेशा सोचता था कि जब तक उसके पास बड़े साधन नहीं होंगे, वह कुछ अच्छा नहीं कर सकता।
एक दिन गाँव के बुज़ुर्ग ने उसे एक दीपक दिया और कहा,
"इसे जलाकर अंधेरी गली में रख दो।"
अर्जुन ने वैसा ही किया। अगले दिन बुज़ुर्ग ने पूछा,
"क्या हुआ?"
अर्जुन ने कहा, "गली में लोग आसानी से निकल गए, क्योंकि अंधेरा नहीं था।"
बुज़ुर्ग मुस्कुराए और बोले,
"देखो बेटा, यह दीपक छोटा है, लेकिन उसने अपने आसपास का अंधेरा मिटा दिया। वैसे ही, तुम्हारे छोटे-छोटे अच्छे काम भी किसी के जीवन में रोशनी ला सकते हैं। बड़े साधनों का इंतज़ार मत करो, जो है उसी से शुरुआत करो।"
