आपको क्या लगता है तारे क्यों टिम-टिमाते है? क्या वह सच में टिमटिमाते है? या वह सिर्फ हमें ही लगते है कि वह टिम टिमा रहे है। चलिए जानते है आसान शब्दो में और शॉर्ट कट में:-
तारे टिमटिमाते हैं क्योंकि उनकी रोशनी पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल से होकर हमारे पास आती है।जब तारों की रोशनी वायुमंडल की अलग-अलग परतों से होकर गुजरती है, तो हवा का घनत्व और तापमान लगातार बदलते रहते हैं।
इससे प्रकाश की किरणें थोड़ा-थोड़ा बार-बार अपवर्तित (मुड़ती) होती है। परिणाम स्वरुप हमें तारे की चमक कभी अधिक और कभी कम दिखाई देती है और ऐसा लगता है जैसे तारे टिमटिम रहे हो।
तारे बहुत दूर होते हैं इसलिए वो हमें आकाश के बिंदु जैसे दिखाई देते है। इस कारण वायु मण्डल का प्रभाव उन पर ज्यादा दिखता है।
गृह जैसे शुक्र या बृहस्पति (Jupiter) आम आकाश में थोड़ा बड़ा क्षेत्र घरात और उनकी रोशनी का प्रभाव ओस्तन प्रभाव स्थर दिखता है।
